The Pingrup Centenary
1923 - 2023
On the 14th and 15th of October 2023, the town of Pingrup was fortunate to experience a beautiful weekend day that drew over 600 attendees to our 100 year celebration event. The Federation Shed hosted a captivating memorabilia display, showcasing sporting clubs, town photos, and local personalities. Among the highlights were a wedding dress exhibit, featuring the first wedding in Pingrup from 1912 to the most recent one in 2023, and a rabbit skin coat from one of the town's earliest settlers. Shearing displays featured seasoned gentlemen demonstrating they still had the touch. The local patchwork group adorned the local church with their beautifully displayed quilts.
The event kicked off with compelling opening speeches by Mike Thomas, Chris Poot CBH, Shire of Kent president Scott Crosby, and local member Peter Rundle. Keith Devenish then treated us to a captivating history presentation, complete with a draft copy of town and family stories—a precursor to an upcoming book slated for publication next year. Families connected to Pingrup are still encouraged to share their stories.
The excitement soared with helicopter flights over the town, providing some residents with a unique perspective of their farming properties. Meanwhile, Burston Park was alive with entertainment for the kids throughout the day.
As the sun set, the evening unfolded with a live band and a spectacular fireworks display, complemented by great meals available all day. Pingrup was alive as all town buildings, including the Town Hall, Community Church, Federation Shed, Old Wheat bin (Shears Shed), café, CRC and the Primary School, opened their doors.
Sunday dawned with a hearty BBQ breakfast, followed by the poetic musings of bush poets and a Thanksgiving Church service.
The success of this monumental community effort, from setup to pack-up, could not have been possible without the collective contributions of all involved. The Pingrup 100 committee extends its heartfelt gratitude to everyone who played a part in making this event possible.
